The university town of Siegen is located in the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein. With 65 percent of the total area covered by forest, the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein is the most densely forested district in Germany. Two thirds of the district area is covered with deciduous and coniferous forests.

In addition to the wealth of forests, this region has another treasure hidden: the springs of the rivers Eder, Lahn and Sieg. They are located a few kilometers apart. All are directly located at the Rothaarsteig a premium long-distance hiking trail. Countless other low mountain streams also have their spring here at the "Rothaarkamm" in an altitude of over 600 meters.
